Choosing between a theme, a custom build and Shopify Plus

Most Shopify projects go wrong at this decision rather than during development. A well-chosen premium theme with careful configuration will serve a large share of stores indefinitely, and spending on a bespoke front end before there is traffic to justify it is the most common way to waste a launch budget.

A custom theme starts to pay for itself when merchandising needs outgrow what the theme editor exposes — unusual product configurations, bundles, subscription mechanics, or a brand presentation that a template genuinely cannot express. At that point the constraint is real rather than aesthetic, and building is cheaper than fighting the theme.

Shopify Plus is a different decision again. It is worth it for checkout customisation, scripts, B2B price lists, multiple storefronts or high-volume flash-sale traffic. If none of those apply, standard Shopify with well-chosen apps usually does the same job for considerably less.

Apps, performance and the cost nobody budgets for

Shopify's app ecosystem is its greatest strength and the most reliable source of slow storefronts. Each app typically injects its own scripts into every page, and a store that has accumulated fifteen or twenty over a few years is often carrying several hundred kilobytes of JavaScript that no one has audited since installation.

The recurring cost is easy to underestimate too. Individually modest monthly fees add up to a meaningful annual line, and apps frequently overlap — two review tools, three analytics scripts, a bundling app that duplicates something the theme already does. An honest audit usually removes more than it adds.

Where an app genuinely earns its place we keep it. Where a small amount of theme code replaces a monthly subscription and a script tag, that is usually the better trade — particularly on collection and product pages, where Core Web Vitals translate most directly into conversion.

Migrating to Shopify without losing search traffic

Replatforming from WooCommerce, Magento or a custom store is where hard-won rankings are most often destroyed, and the cause is almost always the same: URL structures change and the old addresses are left to return 404. Shopify imposes its own path conventions — /products/, /collections/ — so a one-to-one URL match with your old store is rarely possible.

That makes a complete, tested 301 map non-negotiable: every indexed product, collection, page and blog post pointed at its closest equivalent, in a single hop, before launch rather than after. Redirect chains and catch-all rules that dump everything on the homepage both waste the equity you are trying to preserve.

The rest is discipline: preserve product titles and descriptions rather than rewriting them during the move, keep canonical tags clean where Shopify generates duplicate collection paths, and watch Search Console's coverage report closely for the first month so anything missed is caught while it is still cheap to fix.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify development cost? expand_more
It depends almost entirely on which of three routes you take. Configuring a premium theme is the cheapest and suits most new stores. A custom theme costs considerably more and is justified when merchandising needs genuinely exceed what a template exposes. Shopify Plus adds platform fees on top and is worth it for checkout customisation, B2B price lists or multiple storefronts. We scope against your actual requirements rather than quoting a single figure.
Should I use Shopify or Shopify Plus? expand_more
Choose Plus when you need checkout customisation or Shopify Scripts, B2B and wholesale price lists, several storefronts under one organisation, or you regularly handle flash-sale traffic. If none of those apply, standard Shopify with a well-chosen set of apps usually does the same job for significantly less.
Can you migrate my store to Shopify without losing SEO? expand_more
Yes, and the redirect map is the critical part. Shopify enforces its own URL conventions, so old addresses rarely map one-to-one. We build and test a complete 301 map covering every indexed product, collection, page and blog post - single-hop, no chains, no catch-all to the homepage - before launch, then monitor Search Console coverage closely for the first month.
Do too many Shopify apps slow down my store? expand_more
Usually, yes. Most apps inject scripts into every page, and stores that have accumulated fifteen or twenty often carry several hundred kilobytes of unaudited JavaScript. We audit what each app contributes, remove overlapping ones, and replace some with a small amount of theme code - which also cuts the recurring subscription cost.
Can you build custom Shopify apps and integrations? expand_more
Yes. We build private and custom apps against Shopify's Admin and Storefront APIs, and integrate stores with ERP, accounting, inventory, CRM and fulfilment systems so orders and stock stay in sync without manual re-keying.
